In Full Bloom @SPACE - images from the exhibit

So finally, here are the images from the In Full Bloom exhibit at SPACE. I may have to go back. There are over a hundred works from forty artists in the exhibit. It is difficult to take a show like this in all at one time. I saw a lot of the work at drop off and I've been back to the gallery twice since the opening. It's the kind of exhibit where you see something new each time you go, as much because of your mood as the sheer number of works.
Kevin Wenner

I had mentioned that I was going to shoot Kevin Wenner's piece after the opening. Pretty luscious, huh? Speaking of luscious works, check out Ed Parrish's work, below. This was a pretty ambitious undertaking. Someone mentioned to me that he created this piece for the In Full Bloom exhibit.

Masha Vereshchenko

Maybe it was my mood, but I was really drawn to the lush works in the exhibit. Masha Vereshchenko's delicate ink drawings on this heavy-textured paper pulled me in. This deserves more time and I look forward to visiting it again.

Amir Rashidd

This piece really drew me in, too. The dichotomy between the loose ground and the tight rendering of the figure appeals to me.

I wish I could credit this one. The work is hung very high on the wall and I couldn't read its label. Also, my image doesn't do the color justice, so use this as an incentive to go and view the exhibit.

More details about the exhibit can be found here and here.

Man, this weekend is going to be packed

Okay, granted, these are all projects that I'm involved in on some level, to a greater or lesser degree. The stage reading, all I did was read the first draft and encorages the writer, but still... Damn, I can't stand it when I hear someone say there's nothing to do here in da 'burgh.

THE ONLY GOOD ARTIST IS A DEAD ONE
by Rage Stevenson, new Pittsburgh artist via LA.
Stage reading at the Pittsburgh Playwrights
Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company,
542 Penn Ave., Downtown.
6pm, Sunday, April 1st
featuring the talents of the delectable and divine, Phat Man Dee and straight out of Mother Courage's Bamberg, Germany Vince Ventura.
Take a wild and frustrating ride through the mind of a artist teetering on insanity!

Rage Stevenson Bio

Rage Stevenson, a LA artist of the underground scene who has recently located to Pittsburgh will be presenting a scene from his new play. Mark Southers has graciously opened his theater to this new comer. You might think, why come to Pittsburgh, and he'll answer with a smirk, "those sunny days can be really non-inspiring". At 6', with swashbuckling surfer boy good looks, this model turned actor turned writer and painter is deeper than one would think at first.

After trying to make his mark in the LA art world and tiring of the chase, he decided to take a look at what it takes to make art and how that thankless lifestyle can make you crazy. He spent several years interviewing countless artists of all genres across the nation, foundation heads, venue owners, producers and non-profit directors and he has concocted an insanely frustrating look at the inner machinations of a struggling American artist.

Imagine if you will, a fashionably dressed dead best friend, a raging and ranting artist trying to get paid, birds flying, pink nooses, an asshole art buyer and vomit. If your head isn't spinning with a beat down after this stage reading, are you truly living?

Craft Congress

It's not too late -- you too can come to lovely Pittsburgh for the first ever Craft Congress. The Craft Congress has been organized by Handmade Arcade and will take place March 31 - April 1 at Spinning Plates. Information here.

The Pop City article mentions that some crafters have had their ideas lifted by national manufacturers, without acknowledgement or compensation. The congress invites organizers of craft fairs and artists' websites to Pittsburgh to discuss such issues.

The Craft fair has been getting some press locally and nationally in Bust magazine. A number of crafter blogs have been talking about the congress for a few months. Craft revolution has a recent post that lists some of the attendees, who are coming from all over the United States to Pittsburgh. In the article, they quote organizer Gloria Forouzan--

“The goal of Craft Congress is to build connections between the movement's organizers, who have been working to expand the craft culture primarily in their own communities. Craft Congress is an original concept; attendees will have the opportunity to share their knowledge and experience, creating a network that will foster sustainability.”

This is a wonderful idea and I am glad that this event is taking place in Pittsburgh.

In Full Bloom reception@SPACE

SPACE was so crowded at the opening that I really didn't get to look at the work. The show includes over one hundred works by forty artists. It was a massive undertaking. Bob Ziller brought some very fine work in for this exhibit. And the artists really put their best foot forward, with some creating work specifically for this show.

I will be going back over the next week to get images of some of the works but following are some images of the reception.

Christane D. and Eden McNutt
Kevin Wenner, working on Full Bloom. I'll get an image of the completed work when I go back next week.
The inconquerable Marci Gehring. This image is from a previous exhibit, where she was showing off one of her afghan creations. I just love these, especially on tall, lanky women (and men: see below). But on me? No, I would look like a couch!

Marci brought a rack of these garments to the opening; there are more images on Chuck Busha's pbase site. Go check it out, they're way better than mine.

The Sacred Art Exhibition is an Annual Event in the Bloomfield Community. The arts enable contact with The Sacred on an intimate level. By creating, The Sacred is manifested by the hands and a new life is brought into existence. Selection for this exhibition requires that artists submit pieces that explore their personal interpretation of The Sacred. All interpretations, both traditional and nontraditional, are considered. This exhibition does not recognize any difference of authority between the traditions of the God-knowing and the artistic cultures that surround them. - Traditional interpretation of The Sacred includes work that inspires devotion and self transformation with narratives chosen from the great prophets of God such as Krishna, Buddha, Christ, Moses, or Mohammed. Iconography, or the representation of holy persons or events, would be considered examples of traditional interpretations of the Sacred.
- Nontraditional interpretation of The Sacred, may include works that deal abstractly with personal reflections on the natures of truth and beauty in art and life. Saint Patrick, patron saint of the inebriated

Saint Patrick's day in da 'burgh.

How could I have forgotten? Why didn't I just stay home last night?

I went to a fundraiser for the Hill House after work yesterday, Sugar and Soul at the Carnegie Music Hall. Good food, great auction, fabulous music. A beautiful and enjoyable evening.

I should have known when I bussed over to Oakland from Lawrenceville to make the evening short. I don't drive (a whole other story) so I am completely at the mercy of the public transportation system. I had to transfer in downtown, usually dead on Saturday evenings. Well, the bus to Oakland was packed with student revelers. Standing room only on a Saturday night. I did mention Saint Patrick's day, right? Well, nearly everybody on the bus was wearing green, the Irish and the honorary Irish.

Got off the bus at the museum, had a wonderful time at the fundraiser, went to the bus stop to head on home.

That's where things got a lot weird.

The bus was late. I waited for over forty minutes. Wearing a white coat. When the 54C finally came around the corner, I was so ready. And if the people on the bus hadn't shouted at the driver, I probably would have ended up waiting another forty minutes. That's right, she nearly passed me by. Did I mention I was wearing A WHITE COAT?

So it's 11pm, and the bus is packed. Oh yeah, Saint Patrick's day. There was a crowd of inebriated students in the back of the bus. revelry was high, people were laughing and talking. Some kind man made room for me and I settled in for the twenty minute bus ride. On Centre, a man gets on the bus, swaying as he showed his pass. His face lit up when he saw all the kids in green. He shouted down the entire length of the bus Hey! Happy Saint Patrick's day, mutha fuckas, and off he went, to the welcome shouts of the students in the back of the bus. You could here him trying to score with one of the young women, clearly trying to put the make on her.

Hey, you know my wife left me, hey, why don't you come to my house and we'll party all night, c'mon baby.

I mean, endless. But at least he was funny.

Not like the dude who spilled his bag of toiletries around his seat. Who in the process of gathering them just before his stop ended up with his head in my lap, reaching around my feet.

I have never been so happy to be on foot in my life as when I got off the 54C on Penn Avenue.

Next year, I'm either staying home or I'm gonna get totally tanked and join the party. I haven't decided.

All information on class schedules, syllabi, and pricing can be found on their website.

Mixing Images @Trinity

Things are starting to warm up in Pittsburgh. Everybody is coming out of their winter cocoons. On Saturday, I thought I woud get to Trinity gallery as soon as the artist reception started so that I could say hello to the artists and maybe get a few clear shots of the work. The gallery is smallish and can get crowded very quickly. This was the scene when I walked in the door. With that said, I apologize for the images of the work that follow. Some of the work that I wanted to shoot, I couldn't get a clear shot of. So I had to settle.

I am looking at the postcard for this exhibit and there is no closing date or gallery hours, so if you are interested in seeing the exhibit, please contact Dan Gaser at Trinity. I thought Jayne's small mixed medium piece, above, was charming. Jesse's work was pretty dynamic.

Free fall

The Rand Corporation recently published a report, Arts and Culture in the Metropolis - Strategies for Sustainability, which is available online. The report, which compared Philadelphia with ten other urban areas comparable in size, includes Pittsurgh as part of the study. The report analyzes the systems of support for the arts.

There are a large number of foundations in Pittsburgh as well as Philadelphia, many of which support the arts in some form. Some support only education initiatives, some support public programs. The public progrms encompass visual, performing and literary arts.

Unfortunately, foundation support is declining. Many of these organizations are in a position of having to develop new arenas of support for their endeavors. Pittsburgh, with its low median income, lacks indigenous support. You can see this when you go to gallery exhibits. Direct support of artists, through the purchase of artwork, is sadly lacking. A red dot is an occasion to celebrate because of its so-rare occurence.

The current exhibit at SPACE gallery, Home Away, expresses this in a very indirect way. The curator and artists in the exhibit have not posted a pice list. And if you ask the gallery attendant for a price, your inquiry will be met with a flurry of embarassed activity as the attendant makes a number of phone calls tracking down the answer to your question.

The Post Gazette has an article about the Rand report with responses from Mr. McMahon, the President of the Cultural Trust. Some of the statistics quoted in the article give a very clear snapshot of the reasons for the lack of support. Like the highest per capita number of organizations per resident and the decided lack of cooperation among the organizations.

The solution for this dilemma is an elusive one. The Rand Corporation's conclusion that the arts would be well served if there was a strong central agency is a sound one. However, that conclusion is not neccessarily a solution. It would certainly help the arts organizations to have a strong central leadership and to coordinate their activites and promotions more closely. Individual support for the arts is what needs to be nurtured.

Pittsburgh Community Gallery Project Kick-Off Reception

Last week, I posted about this really terrific project that is happening in the Hill District and other Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Well, here are some images from the wonderful kick-off event at the Hill House on Saturday March 3. The grand finale will be a reception for the children at the Hill House on Saturday March 31.

The kids will be working with Deanna Mance, Biko, Tim Fabian and Christine Bethea on Saturdays through March. Tasha Watkins is assisting all of the artists at their workshops. And on April 7, we will be holding Pittsburgh Soars, a kite-flying extravaganza. Denys Candy from the Find the Rivers project has located three flying sites in the Hill District.

So get out your calendar and write down the dates!

women's work

The opening reception for women's work was on March 2. It was a great night. Janis Burley-Wilson selected the work for the show. The work she chose for the exhibit showed a lot of diversity. So often, these group shos tend to be the same people showing with the same people. It was nice to shake up the mix a bit.

The show closes on April 20, which is the next Downtown Gallery Crawl. It's a great time to see all of the visual arts venues in the cultural district.

I love galleries that provide seating. It makes it so much easier to stick around...

Origami Workshop at SCC

I finished the workshop at Society of Contemporary Crafts last Wednesday. It's been a busy week, between Digging Pitt, the Hill House and 709 gallery. I am just getting to posting these now!

This was a really lightly attended workshop, with only three people.

Flat Out @ Unblurred on March 2

Flat Out @Unblurred was a lot of fun last night. Trinity Gallery joined us in bringing work to the Community Activity Center on North Pacific. It's a beautiful space that will hopefully be used for more events like this.

Digging Pitt brought several portfolios of artists works to the venue. Many of the artists included in the flat file archive were represented. It gave us an opportunity to talk about how important an archive is for exposing emerging artists to the general public. And really, there aren't that many galleries that can readily mount an exhibit of this nature on short notice.

We'll be back, so however you're following gallery events, keep an eye open for more of these flat out table top exhibits. If you want to receive gallery updates, you can always get on our update list or become one of our friends on MySpace. And if you would like to host such an event at your venue, please contact us at Digging Pitt.

The Flat Out @Unblurred

The event ended up with a few surprises. Tom Fallon stopped by with some friends to see what we were up to. Tom Fallon and Christine Bethea
